Mark A. Barnhouse

Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, I’ve been fascinated with Denver’s history from an early age. Educated in the Denver Public Schools and the University of Colorado, Denver, my research and writing has been aimed at covering topics largely neglected by other Denver historians (with all due respect to their important work).

Inspired by my friend Tom Noel’s book on the history of Larimer Street, my first book delved into the history of Denver’s second “main street,” 16th Street, which up to that time had not been treated by historians as a distinct place with stories to tell. Since then I have written about Northwest Denver, “lost” Denver, three books on Denver’s long-gone department stores, Denver’s historical sites, a certain famous bookstore, and most recently, our historic cemeteries, cowriting with my friend Jim Cavoto, a longtime Fairmount employee.
